BURUNTUMA
Buruntuma is both a village in Guinea-Bissau and the stage name of a dynamic DJ and producer who’s making waves in Portugal’s Afro House scene. Styled as a modern-day griot, Buruntuma’s music carries the torch of storytelling, cultural memory, and ancestral traditions—reframed through modern electronic rhythms.
His journey to international recognition began in 2014, when his remix of Super Mama Djombo’s "Sol Maior Para o Comandante" earned coverage in the influential magazine THE FADER—a breakout moment that introduced his sound to a broader audience.
In 2020, he scored a major hit with "The End", featuring singer Missy Bity, further establishing his place among the leading voices in Lisbon’s Afro House movement.
Buruntuma has taken his blend of rich West African traditions and electronic grooves beyond Portugal’s borders, performing at revered venues across Europe—including Gretchen (Berlin), Djoon (Paris), Lick (Vilamoura), and Paradiso (Amsterdam)—as well as prominent festivals like Fusion in Larz, Womex in Las Palmas, and Africa Nouveau in Nairobi.
His artistry reflects a synthesis of Guinea-Bissau’s traditional music, West African influences, and the energy of expatriate communities in Lisbon’s suburbs—resulting in a sound that’s both authentic and electrifying on global dance floors.
In August 2023, he collaborated with Cape Verdean singer Dino D’Santiago on the single “Longe.” The track deepens his cross-cultural palette, fusing Cape Verdean and Guinean influences with Afro House rhythms, and delivers an emotional message of perseverance, self-discovery, and introspection.
